How it all Started
ONE of inventor Kevin Wood‘s most successful creations has seen a huge surge of popularity as a learning toy in schools. But he is determined his EasyBrick will one day serve as initially intended: a tool used to build emergency shelters in Third World countries.
EasyBricks are about the same size as normal house bricks but are made of plastic and slot together in a similar way to Lego.
Kevin‘s desire to help people grew stronger after a ten-week stint in hospital. He suffered from heart problems 15 years ago and the stay gave him time to reflect on things.
He said: “At the time it was touch and go. Lying in a hospital bed I started thinking how precious life is and said to myself if I pull through this, I want to do something for humanity.
“I came up with Easybrick and my original plan was for bricks to be dropped from a plane to provide emergency shelters. The material is so light it would be ideal."
Before starting out as inventor Kevin worked as a car mechanic. It was there he said he got a head for solving problems and an insight into how things work.
In the early stages of his EasyBrick design, Kevin wanted to produce the bricks in blocks of 12 but to create the mould for them it would have cost £72,000. This was money he did not have and instead invested in a smaller mould.
He decided to market them towards schools in the hope he could make enough money for the 12 brick mould. Originally Kevin started out lending batches of EasyBricks and they quickly caught on as an educational toy. Many schools were so keen on them they bought batches to keep.
“I didn‘t intend for the bricks to be used the way they are now and it surprised the life out of me when they became so popular! I haven‘t lost sight of my original plan though and still intend to follow through on it when I have the money together.
“I'm delighted schools like them so much, but selling them in this way is a means to an end. Through the more uses people find for the bricks the more I get ideas for improving on them”.
Kevin is 54 and has lived in Chard for 30 years, originally hailing from Derby. He has three children and six grand-children.
“When I first talked about producing EasyBrick people compared it to Lego, but the designs are completely different. On my bricks there is a one and a half degree taper and they are engineered to lock in place.
“My grand-children especially love playing with them and have designed all kinds of models and games to play with them.”
Kevin is a member of the South West Inventors Club which meets once a month in Yeovil. He is keen to promote the group and said: “What you get when you join is free advice and you'll soon decide whether it is for you or not. A lot of people who claim to be able to market your ideas are just people looking for a quick buck and don't really care if your vision is realised.
“The club offers encouragement and can put you on the right track - which all inventors need. The best advice I could give is to never compromise on your designs”
Kevin has a number of other inventions up his sleeve but most of them are “top secret”. Two which are out on the market include ‘Keytag Security’ - a coding system designed to keep keys safe in case of loss. Another of his gizmos is known as ‘Stop It’ - a door hold-back system.
Before his heart problems Kevin enjoyed a number of extreme sports, such as motor-cycle road racing, diving on wrecks, parachuting and more. He said: “Nowadays I‘m really focussed on inventing and spending time with my grandkids and family."
